Native to Mexico, the poinsettia is known as the Christmas Eve Flower. Legend has it, that a young Mexican girl who was too poor to provide a gift in celebration of Jesus’ birthday was inspired by angel to gather weeds on the roadside to place on the alter – from these weeds sprouted the crimson poinsettia. The star-leafed shape is a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem and the red color represents the blood of Christ shed at his crucifixion.
The Christmas Cactus originates from Brazil. They come in many different colors and are most popular at retail during the holiday season. They are typically used for house plants in the U.S. and are easy to care for. They should be grown in small containers and the soil kept moderately wet.
While red is by far the most popular color in the poinsettia line up, they come in a variety of colors. This includes variegated colors (Jingle, Marble, Picasso are a few examples), Whites, Pinks and even Orange. You will see them painted with different colors and sprinkled with glitter. Whatever your taste, you are sure to find the one that’s right for you!
