Floaters, which are not planted, have an extensive root system that draws nutrients for the plant directly from the water. This root system provides natural food, shelter and spawning areas for fish. Floaters should cover about 30% to 40% of your pond’s surface water in order to provide shade and inhibit algae growth. Common varieties include Water Moss (Salvinia
natans), Water Lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) and Water Hyacinth (Eichornia
crassipes). Some varieties are not available for purchase in warmer areas where they are designated as invasive species.
Planting and Care:
Floaters require no planting and should be introduced to your pond only after the risk of frost is past. Treat them as you would any annual and replace them each season.
