The semi-floating Water Lily is a Hardy Native of North America, Europe and Asia. These day bloomers are among the most popular aquatic plants due to the beauty and vibrant color of their flowers. Preferring still water and warm sunny positioning, lilies thrive in the open space of either a man-made or natural pond.
Planting and Care:
Lilies may be planted when dormant or during their active growth
phase. They should be transplanted into large mesh pots using clay
or specific aquatic soil for lilies. Never use planter mix or light
weight soils with
peat moss or vermiculite. Fill your container about two-thirds full
with wet soil. Make a small mound of soil in the center of the pot
and spread the roots
out over the top of the mound. Sprinkle just enough soil over the
roots and rhizome to cover them, but do not bury the rhizome. Place
an inch or two of
pebbles or small rocks on top of the planting medium to hold soil
in place and to keep fish from rooting in the soil. The crown should
be free of soil
and pebbles so that sprouting leaves are not inhibited. Place the
container in your pond (after the water temperature is above 60 degrees) at
a depth of 16” to 24” making sure that the crown is completely submerged. Position
the container in an area free of moving or falling water that will allow at
least 4 to 6 hours of bright sun each day. Lilies will bloom from mid April
to late Autumn.
