Most marginals are versatile, prolific plants that do well in sun or shade. While marginals are represented by a wide spectrum of blooming species and decorative grasses, some of the more common varieties include Canna and Iris varieties, Pickerelweed (Pontederia
cordata), Miniature Bullrush (Typha minima), Lizard’s Tail (Saururus
cernuus), and Umbrella Plant (Cyperus alternifolius). Planted in soil or containers at the edge of the pond, these plants not only serve as an attractive backdrop for your pond, but can aid in the natural filtration of pond water.
Planting and Care:
Marginals should be planted in lighter, more arable soil with high organic content. They may be planted in moist soil or in 1 – 3 gallon containers which are submerged to a depth of about two inches above the top of the pot. Some varieties are quite prolific and may do better contained in a pot. When planting in containers, place an inch or two of pebbles or small rocks on top of the planting medium to hold soil in place and to keep fish from rooting in the soil. These containers should not be fully submerged for the first week after transplantation. Planting may be done as early as March, provided that the water temperature of your pond is at least 50 degrees.
